The Grand Island Music Series will present its ninth concert
of the 2023-2024 season at College Park (3180 West U.S. Highway 34 in
Grand Island), featuring Oscar Erives on Sunday, May 19th at 3:00 pm.
Oscar Alejandro Erives is a concert pianist from Grand Island, Nebraska who is
currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Piano Performance from the University of
Kansas. He is classically trained, but his passion extends into multiple styles
and genres. This ranges from jazz, film scores, video game soundtracks, to even
regional Mexican music. During his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of
Nebraska at Kearney, he performed as a solo and collaborative pianist with
students and ensembles for many recitals. Most recently, he performed a
movement of a piano concerto with the Kearney Symphony Orchestra, and the
national anthem at UNK’s graduation ceremony. Oscar also regularly plays piano
and organ at church, previously serving as a music director at Blessed Sacrament
Catholic Church and St. Teresa of Calcutta Newman Center.
In this concert, Oscar will be performing select works from Japanese film
composer Joe Hisaishi, who is well known for his work at the renowned Studio
Ghibli. Hisaishi’s work encapsulates life’s simple moments while conveying a
wide array of emotions. His colorful music combines aspects of Japanese culture
and western ideas and harmonies.
